Family Friendly Restaurants in Austin

Our Favorite Family Friendly Restaurants in Austin

Going out to eat with children always presents a series of challenges. The conundrum: you go to a restaurant that appeals to you, eat actual good food, but potentially endure whining from the smaller family members, attempt an off-menu order, and/or compromise nutritional value for the little ones (buttered noodles, anyone?). Option two: you go to a kids’ restaurant to avoid tantrums, eat mediocre food, and almost always skip nutritional value all together. But hey, at least there’s no prep or dishes!

Lucky for parents, there are a number of restaurants in Austin engineered precisely to allow parents to avoid the lose-lose situation going out to eat can so often be. Here are some of our favorites restaurants, from ‘fast food’ to sit-downs, that truly offer something for everyone.

Baby Greens

This drive-through salad and wrap restaurant is a great quick stop for health-minded parents on-the-go. The charming mid-century drive through on W. Anderson Lane offers salads, wraps, and soups, plus a kids’ combo with a junior sized wrap, fruit cup, and juice or bottled water for less than $6.

The Soup Peddler

This soup joint has five Austin locations, with the newest at Castle Hill, and offers way more than soup. While the Soup Peddler serves plenty of kid palate-pleasing favorites like chicken soup, tomato soup, grilled cheese, a pizza-inspired sandwich, and strawberry-banana smoothies, they also have plenty for a more sophisticated palate. Think mulligatawny, salads, and green juice. The quick service doesn’t hurt either!

Kerby Lane Café

This Austin original serves tons of kid friendly fare (pancakes all day, y’all) and lots of adults choices too (hello, bloody mary, old friend). Plus they have rotating seasonal menus, healthy options, and plenty of vegetarian, vegan, + GF dishes. With one location on The Drag and the original in Rosedale, you’re never too far from a Kerby Lane.

Flower Child

The Austin outpost of this restaurant from James Beard Award-nominated restaurateur Sam Fox serves up ultra-healthy cuisine. While the main menu is definitely geared toward adults, Flower Child boasts a dedicated kid’s menu with sure-to-please favorites like gluten free Mac n Cheese. It’s the rare restaurant that can satisfy everyone’s appetite and nutritional requirements.

Pinthouse Pizza

Maybe not the absolute healthiest option, but it’s hard to beat a classic pizza place, and a killer beer selection doesn’t hurt either. The pizza-place-meets-brewery boasts big family style tables that make it a great place to meet up with other families. The menu has creative pizzas, nachos, salads and a gluten free crust option; the happy hour runs until 9 p.m. on weekdays; and there are arcade games to keep the kids busy. Win-win-win.
